Welcome to our On-Demand Course for Professionals on OCD and Autism: Treatment That Works.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) frequently co-occur, creating diagnostic and treatment challenges for clinicians. In this advanced, 4-hour on-demand course, Dr. Stacey Dobrinsky delves deeper into the nuanced intersection of ASD and OCD to provide clinicians with the tools they need to accurately assess and effectively treat this complex comorbid presentation.

Building upon foundational knowledge, this course goes beyond surface-level symptom overlap—exploring the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral distinctions between the two disorders. Participants will gain insight into advanced assessment techniques, differential diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment adaptations. The course also incorporates case studies to demonstrate how exposure response prevention (ERP) and other behavioral strategies can be tailored for individuals on the autism spectrum, with emphasis on communication style, cognitive rigidity, sensory sensitivities, and social-emotional processing.

This course is ideal for mental health professionals with a working knowledge of OCD and ERP who are looking to expand their competence in treating neurodiverse clients.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify overlapping behaviors between ASD and OCD and explain how they may manifest differently depending on developmental and cognitive factors.
  • Differentiate the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral profiles of individuals with OCD versus those with ASD to improve diagnostic accuracy.
  • Apply structured assessment strategies to clarify diagnostic ambiguity in cases with potential comorbid OCD and ASD.
  • Adapt ERP and other behavioral interventions to better align with the communication, sensory, and executive functioning needs of neurodiverse individuals.
  • Evaluate case-based scenarios to formulate individualized, developmentally appropriate treatment plans for clients with co-occurring OCD and autism.
