Integrated Psychiatric Services
FAQ

Who can benefit from psychiatric services?

Psychiatric services may be helpful for children, adolescents, young adults, and adults whose anxiety, OCD, or related symptoms significantly interfere with daily life. Medication is not the right choice for everyone, but for some individuals, it can reduce symptom severity and make it easier to fully engage in evidence-based therapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure and response prevention (ERP).

Do I have to take medication to receive treatment at Anxiety Institute?

No. Medication is never required to participate in treatment at Anxiety Institute. Many clients make significant progress through therapy alone, while others may benefit from adding psychiatric care as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Your treatment recommendations are based on your individual needs and goals.

Can I continue seeing my current psychiatrist?

Yes. We are happy to collaborate with your existing psychiatrist whenever possible. If you already have a trusted medication provider, our clinical team will coordinate care to help ensure your treatment plan remains consistent and well integrated.

What happens during the first psychiatric appointment?

Your initial appointment includes a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. Your psychiatrist will review your symptoms, medical history, previous treatments, current medications, and treatment goals. Together, you’ll discuss whether medication may be appropriate and develop a plan that complements your therapy.

How often will I meet with my psychiatrist?

The frequency of appointments depends on your individual needs and treatment plan. Early in treatment, appointments may occur more frequently while medications are being started or adjusted. Once symptoms are stable, follow-up visits are typically scheduled at regular intervals to monitor progress and make any necessary adjustments.

What medications are commonly prescribed for anxiety and OCD?

Treatment plans are highly individualized. Depending on your diagnosis and symptoms, psychiatrists may recommend medications commonly used to treat anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and other evidence-based options. Your psychiatrist will review the potential benefits, side effects, and expected timeline before starting any medication.

Does medication cure anxiety or OCD?

Medication does not cure anxiety or OCD, but it can help reduce symptoms and improve daily functioning. For many individuals, medication works best when combined with evidence-based therapies such as CBT and ERP, allowing clients to participate more fully in treatment and build lasting coping skills.

How do therapy and psychiatry work together?

Our therapists and psychiatrists work collaboratively to provide coordinated care. Regular communication between providers helps ensure treatment recommendations are aligned and adjusted as your needs change. This integrated approach supports more personalized and effective treatment.

Are psychiatric services available for both outpatient therapy and the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

Yes. Psychiatric services can be incorporated into both individual therapy and our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) when clinically appropriate. Our team works together to determine the level of support that best fits each client’s needs.

Do you offer medication management for children, teens, and adults?

Yes. Our psychiatric provider, Dr. Omar Canosa works with children, adolescents, young adults, and adults receiving treatment for anxiety, OCD, and related disorders. Recommendations are individualized based on age, diagnosis, and treatment goals.

What makes Anxiety Institute's psychiatric services different?

Unlike traditional medication management, our Integrated Psychiatric Services are fully coordinated with your therapy team. Our psychiatrists specialize in anxiety, OCD, and related disorders and work alongside therapists trained in CBT and ERP. This collaborative model helps ensure every aspect of treatment supports the same goals and provides continuity throughout your care.
