When a child or adolescent experiences a sudden onset of OCD or other neuropsychiatric symptoms, could an infection or inflammatory process be contributing to the clinical picture?

In this interdisciplinary webinar, child and adolescent psychiatrist Omar Canosa, MD, and pediatrician Ajay Mirani, MD, will explore PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome)/PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections) from both psychiatric and medical perspectives. Participants will learn how these conditions may present in clinical practice, how to evaluate symptom and infection timelines, and when further medical workup may be warranted. The presenters will also examine proposed biological and neuroinflammatory mechanisms, distinguish current evidence from areas of ongoing controversy, and discuss treatment considerations—including antibiotics, psychiatric care, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

CE credit(s) available for clinical professionals, psychologists, therapists, counselors, and social workers. See below for details.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify key clinical features and symptom patterns associated with PANS/PANDAS, including sudden-onset OCD and other neuropsychiatric symptoms.
  • Describe how symptom onset, recent infections, and clinical history inform the evaluation and medical workup of suspected PANS/PANDAS.
  • Differentiate current scientific evidence from areas of ongoing debate and describe medical and psychiatric treatment considerations within an interdisciplinary approach to care.

1.5 CE credits will be provided by AKH Inc., Advancing Knowledge in Healthcare.

Please note:
CE credits are only awarded to attendees who participate in the live session. Watching a recording of the previously recorded webinar does not qualify for credit.
